Film - a review
Six of us went to see the live filming of Arthur Miller's play All our sons at Mareel on 18 April. There was 100% approval from us - it was totally absorbing with brilliant acting from the National Theatre actors. Five us then had time to enjoy a cup of tea afterwards and share and discuss our thoughts. An excellent afternoon out! We are definitely interested in further live screening from the National Theatre. Watch this page and also the Events page to find out about our next visit.
Photographic exhibition - JD Rattar
I was already acquainted with the photographs of J D Rattar when growing up in rural Sussex in the 1950s. My parents, who had been stationed in Shetland for much of the war, had returned to England with several of Rattar's famous views. It is not fanciful to suggest that these pictures hanging in the living room played a part in my attraction to Shetland as a place to live and work.
Last Tuesday (25 August) six members of Shetland's U3A visited the current Rattar Exhibition at the Museum. As well as a great many enlarged photos displayed on the walls there was a rolling programme of around 100 projected images from all areas of Shetland and a special display of his images of sea birds, chicks and nests. Ratter travelled the length and breadth of the Islands to photograph systematically all the familiar views, together with plenty of rarely seen ones. Some of these pictures were only approachable on water, and so Ratter often took with him a small rowing boat strapped onto the roof of his car. As well as his wonderful photographs of Shetland he included pictures of Shetlanders working outside and in family groups in the home. He obviously paid great attention to detail and compositions were made with loving care. His superb workmanship was greatly helped by his state-of-the-art equipment and the special glass negative plates that he used.
This was a great outing for the Oot'n'Aboot group, further enhanced by the coffee and cake afterwards! Nigel 28 August 2026
